Need to know – 1 – Open Rack

Open Rack introduces new paradigm in datacenter rack power distribution with a centralized power shelf per rack which is servicing electronic equipments with DC power, removing the hassle to maintain dual redundant PSU per elements, and complex PDU wiring. Centralized power shelf improves energy efficiency and reduces maintenance cost by reducing elements counts and improving remote manageability.

The tradeoff is that the shelf needs to be setup at the right scale. The maximum power that an Open Rack v1  sustain is 12kW, keeping redundancy capabilities by accepting a single PSU unit failure (each shelf can contain up to 6 PSU block). Do not forget to populate your powershelf !

12kW is far more than enough to address air cooled datacenter capabilities. Open Rack and associated Open Compute elements are designed to run in free cooling conditions which makes it the perfect choice for the greenest datacenters.
